3-4 years

These early years of a child’s life are fundamentally important. They are the foundation that shapes children’s future health, happiness, growth, development and learning achievement at school, in the family and community, and in life in general.

Children learn more quickly during their early years than at any other time in life. They need love and nurturing to develop a sense of trust and security that turns into confidence as they grow. Although all children go through more or less the same stages they do it in different ways, some will learn one new skill very quickly and seem slower at another, this is totally normal. Around 4 years old, children start to learn about sharing and taking turns, they are able to play cooperatively with other children building a good foundation to their social and motoring skills.

Children develop at different rates and in different ways, it’s important to understand, support and encourage each child’s ability individually.

During these years children usually begin to be able to:

  • Remember more than a single thought at one time
  • Learn about differences between objects and people
  • Enjoy structure and a routine to feel safe
  • Develop confidence in his/her physical ability
  • Make conversation about lots of different topics
  • Learn about the world and how it works
  • Enjoy stories and asks lots of questions
  • Become more independent and resistant to help
